Obituary

Those who truly knew and loved Katie, know that above all else, Katie was a generous and beautiful person who loved to help others. Caring for others was her life's purpose, and she died on July 17, 2016, fulfilling that purpose while trying to save a friend. We will always remember Katie's kind and caring spirit, her giving nature towards others, her passion for travel and experiencing life to the fullest, the incredible love she had for animals, and the beauty she brought to this world and shared with those around her.

Katie's wishes are that there be no funeral, no memorial service, and certainly no mourning for her. She was a special girl who loved bright colors and living a vibrant life full of happiness, love, and everything radiant and beautiful. There will be a "Celebration of Katie" at a date to be determined in the future.

For now, we hope you will join Katie's family in celebration of Katie and embrace her wishes.
Kathy L Detamore, Mother; Thomas P Swientek, Father;
Sarah Onan, sister and her husband Brandon Onan, and their sweet little daughter, Addison Macy;
Benjamin Lang, brother along with wife Stephanie Lang and daughter Makenzie;

Katie's wishes now and always include that you:
Wear bright colors in her honor and for the joy of yourself.
Help others with the same generous spirit that she did.
Share and spread your love with all like she did.

We are extremely thankful to see so many who truly care about Katie sharing all the fun, the laughter, happy memories, beautiful pictures, and most all of all the LOVE that Katie gave this world.

They are truly healing for all of us.

Please understand that Katie is not gone! She lives on and shines as a bright, beautiful, colorful spirit and angel who can now fulfill her true passion of watching over us and blessing us all with her love.

WE WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU KATIE!

Katie had an incredible passion for traveling. She felt so fortunate and happy to have the opportunity to participate in four Study Abroad Programs during her college days at Michigan State University. She greatly loved her experiences on each one of them and had an unforgettable time exploring, learning, and seeing life from several aspects.

Katie, her family, and her friends would be so pleased to know that other students can share in this joy and have the opportunity to experience their own Study Abroad Program through your gift to the Study Abroad Scholarship Fund.
